Jim was a Sea Scout, a division of the Boy Scouts, where he became enchanted with the sea and sailing and boats. Believe me he was cute in his uniform. He became a serious student of maps and sailing techniques.
One summer Dad rented a house on Hood Canal and the family spent 2 or 3 weeks there. Jean tells me that Jim rigged a board, similar to a paddle board, with a broom for a mast and a beach towel for a sail. She remembers him out there on the canal tacking back and forth and loving every minute of it.
Later in life he had bigger versions of the dream.
